So even though this is her first foray into poetry, it’s not surprising that Even This Page is White is a complete success, and a stunning, diverse, daring collection. This is Shraya’s debut poetry collection, but it’s not her first book: she’s also written a novel ( She of the Mountains) and a couple memoirish/non-fiction books ( God Loves Hair and What I LOVE about Being QUEER), in addition to being the kind of artist that makes all kinds of art (music, photography-notably this really cool project where she re-enacted old photos of her mom). It’s really too bad, though, because so many people need this book (me included), and it’s such an accessible, yet beautiful collection of poems. Of course, it’s a book published by a small (amazing) independent Canadian publisher (Arsenal Pulp Press), so it’s not surprising this poetry book wasn’t getting tons of publicity and attention in 2016. When one of my fellow Book Riot writers was asking for contributions to a post about this year’s best under-the-radar books, Vivek Shraya’s debut poetry collection Even This Page is White was the first book to come to mind. While in the military, he was hit on the head and suffered a concussion, which later caused him to be struck blind while walking down a street one day in France. With the advent of World War II, Griffin did military service from 1942-45. His first work, The Devil Rides Outside, is an autobiographical account of his time there and personal struggles during this period of his life. Griffin also spent time at the Abbey of Solesmes contemplating a religious vocation. He ultimately received a certificate in piano and composition. Griffin was educated at the Institute de Tours, the University of Poitiers, and the Conservatory of Fontainbleau, all in France. : "John Howard Griffin, born June 16, 1920, in Dallas, Texas, was a writer, journalist, humanitiarian, and social critic. Griffin, John Howard, 1920-1980 Authoritative Name: Unsure at the time whether or not she should mention it to Roz, she had decided to do so over coffee that night. The open house was heavily attended, marred only by Caprice spotting Ted passionately kissing a woman in one of the bedrooms. She had removed some of the massive fixtures and replaced the heavy drapes to give it a more spacious, modern yet distinctive feel. With Caprice's home decorating business slow, she had taken to applying her talents to staging homes that were having a hard time selling, and the Winslow place was definitely one of those. There was even a sword room filled with antique weaponry. Even the inside had an Old World feel to it, with faux-stone panels and brick veneers to make it appear more castle-like. A castle was probably more descriptive, complete with two towers capped by cone-shaped roofs. Review: When interior designer Caprice De Luca goes to pick up her friend Roz Winslow for coffee before Roz and her husband Ted take off for a romantic weekend in New York City, they are shocked to discover Ted dead in his sword room, one of his prized daggers placed firmly in his back, in Staged To Death, the first mystery in this series by Karen Rose Smith.Įarlier that week Caprice had held an open house for the Winslows, who were trying to sell their suburban mansion. His last published book was the Native American tale Shaman (1991). Shea went on to write historical action novels, including Shike (1981), a two-volume novel set in Ancient Japan about the warrior monk Jebu and his love Lady Shima Taniko, All Things Are Lights (1986), and The Saracen, a novel published in two volumes in 1989 depicting the struggle between a blond Muslim warrior called Daoud ibn Abdullah and his French crusader adversary Simon de Gobignon. He and Wilson, though living in Chicago and California respectively, remained good friends in later years. They are, by definition, behind everything." "Maybe," he wrote, "the Illuminati are behind this game. Shea provided in 1983 a brief introduction for the Illuminati Expansion Set rule book. A trading card game, Illuminati: New World Order, and a role-playing game, GURPS Illuminati, followed. Illuminati, a card game from Steve Jackson Games, was inspired by the books. Objectivity was jettisoned, as indeed was subjectivity: no single point of view or version of reality was privileged: Illuminatus! was the three-volume consequence. Their philosophical and political differences merely served to enrich their efforts. It would combine sex, drugs, religious cults and conspiracies, as well as anarchy. Jerusalem Film Festival Sets Guy Nattiv's 'Golda' Starring Helen Mirren As Opening Film Some of the characters were honestly more likeable than Rachel, despite being extremely flawed, like Mina. And then add in the fact that they had to keep up appearances and didn't get any help from their management company to resolve issues, it was a disaster waiting to happen.Īll the characters had good and bad moments with Rachel and Jessica does give valid reasons for their behavior. It's more a story of bad communication and unbalanced privilege in an extremely competitive environment. It wasn't "the others hate me because I'm so perfect" like sones claim. Jessica obviously wrote this from her own POV but she really did try to be fair and defend a lot of what was going on from the other side. They have taken to calling her the "SNSD-anti" and regurgitate the same points over and over again: "Jessica makes herself a perfect cucumber hating Mary Sue and is bullied by the 8 others because she's so perfect" and adding things that aren't true because they've never read the books and only skimmed some pages online. I just want to clarify some things because 99% of the hate I'm seeing directed at both sides are coming from people who never actually read either of the books, and only use a few pages out of context to fit their narratives.Īnyone that pops into r/SNSD will see all the toxicity by the same prominent 5 members that have been dragging Jessica before her first book was even out. |
